Emancipator – Soon It Will Be Cold Enough

February 29, 2008

Emancipator is a collection of beautiful mistakes
captured from the aural ether.

Emancipator escaped from the Underground Railroad Chain Gang in the 11th century. He invented the hot air balloon, with which he chartered the Amazon River. He invented wine.

Emancipator found the formula for the crystallization of ice during a quiet Japanese winter. He perfected the art of agriculture. He can climb trees faster than you.

Emancipator bleeds ambrosia. He discovered Iceland. He can breathe underwater.

Emancipator lives in a fortress made of moon rock. His presence attracts songbirds. He can recite all the digits of pi.

Emancipator can do a barrel roll by pressing Z or R once.

Incorporating violins, keys, various samples and the occasional voice sample, this Emancipator has put together a release more than worthy of the attention of record labels. The fact that this album was funded not by a record label, but by a college student records in his spare time, is quite admirable. He has recently been signed to Hydeout Productions, which will be releasing Soon It Will Be Cold Enough on April 25th.

MGMT – Time To Pretend

February 29, 2008

edited: This is MGMT’s demo release from 2005. Also check out Adam’s post on MGMT’s full length, Oracular Spectacular.

MGMT (formerly known as “the management”) seems to pull from the oddest combination of genres. While at times MGMT has a playful 70’s dance sound in songs like “Electric Feel”, they move on to a much more classic rock, Rolling Stones-esque sound in songs like “Pieces of What.” They can also throw something much more psychedelic in songs like “4th Dimensional Transition.”

Patric Wolf – Wind In the Wires

February 28, 2008

This isn’t particularly new, seeing as it came out in 2005, but nobody has mentioned anything about Patrick Wolf on this blog, and I think you all might like him. I first heard this album in high school and was instantly hooked. I was getting into gypsy stuff and Reid gave me this cd. When I first heard “Libertine” with its crazy synthetic noises mixed with piano, violin, horse hooves and god knows what else, I just had to close my eyes and let it seep into my soul. For real. My soul. Lyrically, he’s not fantastic, but his musical techniques are flawless.
“Wind in the Wires” is quite different than his much less refined, more dissonant first album, “Lycanthropy.” His most recent album, “The Magic Position” is pretty good overall, but doesn’t have the continuity and wholeness that “Wind in the Wires” does.
Each song on the album follows perfectly from the previous one. This is one of those albums where you can’t just listen to one song. It gets off to an intense and dark start with “The Libertine” and maintains the darkness without cheesing out too hard. The climax comes when Patrick screams, “My name is Tristan, and I am alive!” The finale “Land’s End” is a seven minute, two part closer that invites you to celebrate, then crashes your hopes against the rocks of “The Shadow Seas.”

I don’t own a computer, so I can’t upload any music, but I linked a few youtubes. The film quality is terrible and the acting is even worse, so I recommend listening to the songs without actually watching the videos.

Kevin Drew – Spirit If…

February 27, 2008

Co-founder of Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew released his solo album “Spirit If…” last summer and it is nothing short of fabulous. Featuring cameos from many of Broken Social Scene’s current and former members like Feist, Stars, and Dinosaur Jr., the album is composed of ambiguous and suggestive lyrics. “Spirit If…” has an air of shabby romanticism that manages to maintain a feeling of exquisiteness at the same time. The vocals are blended at a level that allows for comprehension, even if the words themselves aren’t always understood. Allow time for this album to sink in because it is only after many listens that it’s true distinctiveness sets in.

Burden Of A Day – Blessed Be Our Ever After

February 26, 2008

Burden of a Day will stake their reputation on their ability to perform.

NOTE: one-handed cartwheels on stage:

Touring through the lower 48 states as well as Europe, they’ve exhibited an energy and a presence seldom matched. Hailing from Sarasota, Florida – a retired people’s town with a music scene as cold and unforgiving as the winters most move there to escape – they’ve managed to accumulate a following that keeps even their smallest shows well populated.

This album receives mixta peep’s official seal of approval.

Burden Of A Day – Pilots & Paper Planes

February 26, 2008

With their debut album Pilots & Paper Planes, Burden Of A Day burst out of Florida with a musical prowess full of catchy hooks and anthemic vocals that still packs an intensity not often felt from such young bands.

Pilots & Paper Planes was released in 2006; Blessed Be Our Ever After (2008) has been seeing many spins on my iPod lately.

City and Colour – Bring Me Your Love

February 26, 2008

City and Colour is an acoustic side-project fronted by Dallas Green, who is most famous for being a member of the band Alexisonfire. The name City and Colour stems partially from Dallas’ humble nature, as he was uncomfortable releasing material under his full name, instead preferring a stage name. Dallas being a city, and Green a color, the name is very fitting indeed. This is the second release by Green, the follow up to Sometimes, which went Platinum in Canada and received the Juno Award for Alternative Album Of The Year (2007).

Shiny Toy Guns – We Are Pilots

February 26, 2008

Shiny Toy Guns is an indie rock band from Los Angeles, California that formed in 2002. They have since released their album We Are Pilots three different times, on three different record labels, each release containing a slightly different track listing. On December 6, 2007, We Are Pilots received a Grammy Award nomination in the category of Best Electronic/Dance Album, but lost to the Chemical Brothers. Nonetheless, We Are Pilots is a top notch album (we can only hope after three releases).

Many of the songs on the album have been used in tv/film scores (The Real World, One Tree Hill, America’s Next Top Model, Dancing with the Stars, etc.), commercials (Honda, Motorola) and video games (Burnout, FIFA ‘07).
