Underoath Discography

May 30, 2008

New album on the horizon (September 2, 2008), so I figured it’s time for a discog!

I love this band. When I saw them in concert, I remember 2 songs, but for the remainder of the set I was on a natural high, and don’t remember much. Other than it was incredible. It was an experience like no other. I also crowd-surfed and lost my phone during their set.

I’d recommend starting with Define The Great Line, an album that peaked at #2 on the US Billboard. Define is my favorite album of all time.

Unlike They’re Only Chasing Safety, Define The Great Line was written by both Spencer Chamberlain (screams) and Aaron Gillepsie (drums/vox). Chamberlain would write the lyrics he would sing, Gillespie would do the same, and sometimes they would trade lyrics with each other. They’re Only Chasing Safety was written completely by drummer and singer Aaron Gillespie. Track 5, “Sálmarnir”, is keyboardist Christopher Dudley’s cousin reading Psalm 50:1-6 in Russian. In the background is a live recording of the Psalm in English.

The first two albums are very different from the more recent ones, and feature a much darker, brutal sound.

NEW ALBUM (September 2, 2008)

Weezer – Weezer (Red Album)

May 28, 2008

Weezer. If you haven’t heard of them, there’s something wrong with you. Catchy pop hooks. Crunchy guitar.

The band’s third self-titled release, dubbed the Red Album, just leaked. Thankfully this album sounds nothing like their previous effort, Make Believe. Definitely give this album a listen.

Dntel – Dumb Luck

May 28, 2008

Dntel, or James Scott Tamborello by birth, is an electronic music artist. He released his full-length album Life Is Full of Possibilities in 2001. The album featured several guest artists on vocals, guitars and other instruments. The most well-received song was the Ben Gibbard collaboration “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan”, which led to a single in 2002, and later, the forming of the band The Postal Service with Gibbard.

Dumb Luck is Dntel’s third, and most recent album. The sound of Dumb Luck is a less glitch-oriented and more electroacoustic sound than more of his earlier work, although electronics are still the primary sound in some songs. The tracklist is posted so you can see the featured artists.

1. “Dumb Luck”
2. “To a Fault” [ft. Grizzly Bear]
3. “I’d Like to Know” [ft. Lali Puna]
4. “Roll On” [ft. Jenny Lewis]
5. “The Distance” [ft. Arthur & Yu]
6. “Rock My Boat” [ft. Mia Doi Todd]
7. “Natural Resources” [ft. Andrew Broder of Fog]
8. “Breakfast in Bed” [ft. Conor Oberst]
9. “Dreams” [ft. Mystic Chords of Memory]

Reuben

May 24, 2008
‘Look like tramps, sound like Kings’

Reuben are a three-piece musical group from United Kingdom. Their music can be said to be a fusion of alt-rock and hevy metal, as their songs cover a variety of styles, ranging from heavy and upbeat, such as their 2005 single “Blamethrower” to slower, more melodic songs such as their 2004 single “Moving to Blackwater”. The former style of song often features vocalist Jamie switching between shouting and whispering, a technique often used in heavy metal and post-hardcore music.

Horse Feathers – Words Are Dead

May 23, 2008

I’m sorry that it took me so long to post this! This cd is a favorite of mine. I first had the pleasure of seeing this ridiculously talented ensemble last September with Caroline Smith & Johanna Kunin. “Hardwood Pews” and “In Our Blood” are two of my favorites!

The A-B Theory – Illusions

May 20, 2008

The A-B Theory is an up-and-coming band from Dallas, TX that features electro style music with a Ben Gibbard-style voice by Jesse Smith.

The reason the album art looks so goofy is because:
1) it was taken from a photograph of the album
2) Jesse spray painted all the CD cases by hand

In Flight Radio – The Sound Inside

May 20, 2008

As some may know, I’m nearly finished with my Music Production Minor at my college. I want to produce, or at least engineer the recording of music. My purpose in bringing this up is to describe In Flight Radio:

Brooklyn-born songwriter, lead singer and guitarist, Peira, has an amazingly smooth and wispy voice, the tone an audio engineer dreams about. Her vocal tone is the centerpiece of the album. I can only imagine, but I would guess that every mixing decision was made with her vox in highest priority. Everything else on the album compliments her voice perfectly. A job well done by the studio team.

Ethereal British-influenced rock with lush female vocals and atmospheric guitars.

In Flight Radio has arrived at a place where they feel they can stay true to their indie-rock roots, while also touching on the British rock anthems and shoegazing textures that they grew up listening to. It’s a sound that can be felt as well as heard. It is truly The Sound Inside.

Inept – So Much Between Us

May 20, 2008

Inept is a high energy rock band from Chicago Illinois. With passion, charisma, and dedication, Inept has made a name in the Midwest music scene. They bring an explosive live show to each stage that they perform on. Inept has played on the 2004 and 2005 Warped Tour, the 2006 Taste of Chaos tour, Dirtfest 2006, and The Bamboozle Left in 2006.

These guys have played Minneapolis a couple times, at the Quest (which has since burned down) and the Toybox (which has since gone out of business). They have tons of stage presence, and immense energy. Their songs feature catchy choruses, with soaring vocal melodies, TBS-like call and answer harmonies, punchy drum beats, and crunchy guitar riffs. Inept is a band who is anything but what their name describes. Check it out.

Gwen Stacy – The Life I Know

May 20, 2008

Gwen Stacy is an Christian metalcore band from Indianapolis, Indiana, currently signed to Ferret Records. The band formed in late 2004 and has worked hard and toured vigorously ever since. They are good friends with The Devil Wears Prada, MyChildren MyBride, The Human Abstract, and have toured with them.

The Life I Know is Gwen Stacy’s first full length album under Ferret Records, released February 5, 2008. It’s solid metalcore, featuring the necessary dissonant guitar screaches, rhythmic thunderstorm of drumming, and head-banging breakdowns. As an added bonus, they’re Christian guys, so you know they’re not screaming about gruesome disfigurement. Overall, a solid album.

Atmosphere – When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold

May 20, 2008

This is the pride and joy of the Minneapolis hip hop scene.

When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold is the sixth full-length studio album by Minneapolis hip hop duo Atmosphere. It was released on Slug’s own Rhymesayers Entertainment label on April 22, 2008 to considerable critical acclaim. Because of concerns over piracy, Rhymesayers decided not to send advance copies to critics; instead, the label invited critics to listening parties.

Well, the album inevitably leaked, but I restrained every desire within me to post it on this blog, because neither Adam nor I wanted to detract from the album sales. Its been out for a few weeks, and I’m posting it now in the hopes that you guys will listen, love, and buy this album.

When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold debuted at number 5 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling about 36,000 copies in its first week. It is Atmosphere’s first album to reach the top ten of the Billboard 200 and the highest charting release from the independent label Rhymesayers.
