Three Years Hiding – We Lost Ourselves & Found Our Way To This

April 8, 2008

Pop-rock brilliance…Combinging the atmospheric indie sound of Minus The Bear, the layered vocal assault of Taking Back Sunday and melody driven Jimmy Eat World style choruses, TYH are a delight…There are so many hooks that make them stand-alone…Sometimes cute, sometimes arrogant and often brilliant this debut is one of the strongest of its genre in a long long time.

Three Years Hiding is a rock/pop punk band from the UK. Their album just came out, and it’s chock full of melodic hooks. There’s even a piano ballad half way through. I love the singer’s accent. A good summer album.

Zwan – Mary Star Of The Sea

April 1, 2008

Billy Corgan and his side projects since the original demise of ‘The Smashing Pumpkins’ have often been dismissed & with good merit…. I mean his solo effort was positively average at best for example. As a result people tend to completely dismiss anything Billy has been involved with since the original Pumpkins run. However by doing this they also skip this gem of an album which sees Billy lead a super band which in truth sounds more of a ‘band’ then ‘The Smashing Pumpkins’ ever did (by that I mean it would seem Billy wasn’t a dictator this time round).

This album is very much a pop rock one, it’s allot less heavy then the pumpkins and allot more happy, think of Siamese Dreams sprinkled with sugar (in a non sickening way) and this is pretty much what you get. The sunshine pop here is almost essential for a summers day & is composed of some really nice melodies, memorable hooks and doesn’t feel as cold and empty as anything else Billy did this millennium.

People who automatically dismiss this album should probably check it out, it’s easily in the top 3 records Billy has ever put out (not the best of course) but it’s refreshing to hear something so fun and joyful come from this otherwise cold figure of late.
