Mel Gibson and the Pants – Sea vs. Shining Sea [2007]

August 9, 2008

You like Doomtree?

Sea vs. Shining Sea is the third release from Mel Gibson and the Pants. This time around, they brought together Doomtree artists Sims, Mictlan, and Dessa, as well as Crescent Moon of Kill the Vultures, and Jake Luck of Thinder in the Valley. Recorded by Joe Mabbot in 2005, and designed by Jesse Willenbring, with drawing contributions from Jacy Catlin. First time they’ve done a jewel case, also the first lyric booklet. The seas are exploding with battles, its time they were brought to the surface.

Heiruspecs – A Tiger Dancing

June 15, 2008

More St. Paul rap from Heiruspecs.

Well into the second generation of hip-hop, Heiruspecs are aware of the tradition from which they have grown–the track “Dollar” even name checks some of their influences. However, an awareness of history has also allowed them to push and pull against any limitations that tend to shadow the commercial ascension of any new musical genre. Favoring bands like De La Soul, the recurring electric piano parts tie part of their sonic identity more into seventies and eighties sitcom theme songs than to the slash and wallop of rap. (Try listening to “5ves” without picturing the opening credits of “Taxi.”) Heiruspecs have seamlessly incorporated elements of soul, pop and jazz, sculpting a nicely diversified album experience.

Heiruspecs – Small Steps

June 15, 2008

Heiruspecs (pronounced high-roo-spex) is a live rap/hip hop band based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, specifically the Midway neighborhood. The band’s name is based on a deliberate misspelling of haruspex.

Heiruspecs formed in 1997 when the members were attending St. Paul Central High School. In 2004, Heiruspecs was named the best live artist in the Twin Cities by City Pages.

My favorite thing about this band? The bass player goes by “Twinkie Jiggles”.

Atmosphere – When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold

May 20, 2008

This is the pride and joy of the Minneapolis hip hop scene.

When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold is the sixth full-length studio album by Minneapolis hip hop duo Atmosphere. It was released on Slug’s own Rhymesayers Entertainment label on April 22, 2008 to considerable critical acclaim. Because of concerns over piracy, Rhymesayers decided not to send advance copies to critics; instead, the label invited critics to listening parties.

Well, the album inevitably leaked, but I restrained every desire within me to post it on this blog, because neither Adam nor I wanted to detract from the album sales. Its been out for a few weeks, and I’m posting it now in the hopes that you guys will listen, love, and buy this album.

When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold debuted at number 5 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling about 36,000 copies in its first week. It is Atmosphere’s first album to reach the top ten of the Billboard 200 and the highest charting release from the independent label Rhymesayers.
