P.O.S. – Audition

April 15, 2008

P.O.S. brings something interesting to the Minneapolis rap scene; a punk rock twist. Influenced mostly by his high school interest in punk, P.O.S.’s raps are usually accompanied with heavy guitar, and the occasional screamo hook. P.O.S. has incredible talent in both his lyrics and speed. Definitely check it out if you’re looking for something to get you beyond the popular shit.

P.O.S. is also the frontman of Minneapolis collective Doomtree. Check them out too.

Doomtree – False Hopes

April 7, 2008

Had to post this after seeing the Dessa post below.

Doomtree is a rap collective out of Minneapolis. Contributing MC’s include: Cecil Otter, P.O.S., Dessa, Mictlan and Sims. Contributing DJ’s include: Paper Tiger, Lazerbeak, Marshall Larada, and Turbo Nemesis.

It’s all dope. Check the show on the 19th at First Avenue. I know I’d be there if it weren’t for a certain piano god.

Dessa – Mine Shaft

April 7, 2008

Dessa could pretty much be described as the first lady of local rap group Doomtree. An extemely talented poet & musician, Dessa’s lyrics demonstrate wisdom well beyond her years. This single is particularly stunning.

If you like it, check her out at the next Doomtree show April 19th at First Ave!

Bisc1 – When Electric Night Falls

April 2, 2008
Hip hop is a funny thing, most of it I believe is a pretty lack luster genre running out of ideas & especially in the mainstream lacks any creativity, edge, urgency or wit. This is where the underground can shine with Glitch Hop leading an ever increasing storm in the scene & it appeals to practically everyone, this however is not a glitch hop album… this is straight to the point smooth hip hop. The album is silky smooth with string arrangements, an element of street and just the general smooth feel which isn’t for once is not terribly dull or cliche.

Lyrically this album is nothing SPECIAL but it’s certainly not cringe worthy, Biscs flow is very nice giving these smooth street beats all the justice they deserve. This does sound like an album which could potentially leave a very large impression providing it gets the correct exposuer & whilst it defiantly will appeal to the underground crowd the is enough here to appease the mainstream, people who simply DON’T like hip hop like at all should probably give this one a skip since, as I said, this is a straight up hip hop record.
